Tainted Weight Loss Pills - Consumer Alert

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration [FDA] has updated an alert on tainted weight loss pills.
An FDA analysis found that the undeclared active pharmaceutical ingredients in some of these products include sibutramine (a controlled substance), rimonabant (a drug not approved for marketing in the United States), phenytoin (an anti-seizure medication), phenolphthalein (a solution used in chemical experiments and a suspected cancer causing agent) and bumetanide (a diuretic). Some of the amounts of active pharmaceutical ingredients far exceeded the FDA-recommended levels, putting consumers' health at risk...
The health risks posed by these products can be serious; for example, sibutramine, which was found in many of the products, can cause high blood pressure, seizures, tachycardia (rapid heart beat), palpitations, heart attack or stroke. This drug can also interact with other medications that patients may be taking and increase their risk of adverse drug events. The safety of sibutramine has also not been established in pregnant and lactating women, or in children younger than 16 years of age.

I write much about our obesity problem but I also let you know about the safe products I take. Please be most careful if you are buying something - read the label...my label has no words on it that sound like chemicals - mine sound like foods - because they are!

Make a healthy choice..

Obesity: The Latest Statistics [hint - they are bad]

This information is from 2005-2006. It takes a while to gather and analyze info so we can probably safely assume it's worse now in 2009!
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The number of obese American adults outweighs the number of those who are merely overweight, according to the latest statistics from the federal government.

Numbers posted by the National Center for Health Statistics show that more than 34 percent of Americans are obese, compared to 32.7 percent who are overweight. It said just under 6 percent are "extremely" obese.

"More than one-third of adults, or over 72 million people, were obese in 2005-2006, the NCHS said in its report.
And:
In May, the CDC reported that 32 percent of U.S. children fit the definition of being overweight, 16 percent were obese and 11 percent were extremely obese.

Still Learning

I'm in Chicago at a meeting - where I have learned a lot more about nutrition and it's effects on the process known as aging. There was a discussion of obesity and a new product which I am trying. It targets fat loss and I will post pre and post photos in a few weeks - but for now I can say that the people I talked to who were on the trials of this product lost fat and inches and looked great!

I'm not overweight but I have those mid body inches I would like to get rid of. I'll keep you all posted:-)

As I am not on my own computer it's hard to post. Am using my son's lap top and I have to share it...so posting will be sporadic until I am back home....

Obesity

If you have been reading this blog you know I harp on obesity - it's bad and getting worse - for adults and for kids..

A new report came out this week which indicates that obesity rates have increased in 37 states! And in more than half of the states - more than 25% of the adults are now obese...

The worst state? Mississippi - where 31.7% are obese. The best is Colorado where only 18.4 % are obese. But to my way of thinking - even 18% is bad; there is nothing good about being obese.

Full article here so you can see where your state falls on the scale: http://www.rwjf.org/newsroom/product.jsp?id=33833

And the problem is increasing every year. We have not been able to convince people that super sizing and lack of activity are bad for them.

A good sized meal is one that is about the size of your fist! That's sufficient fuel for your body - unless you are Michael Phelps and swimming in the Olympics! But it isn't just how much you eat - it's what.

I've never seen the research on this but I am a firm believer that the obesity problem parallels the low fat no fat "matters" that went on sale. The more we eat of those chemical laden "matters" the fatter we are getting and the more health problems we are having. I have a rule of thumb when reading ingredients - if it sounds like a chemical or I can't even pronounce it - I don't buy it.. All those "matters" [I can't honestly call them food] need chemicals to give them some taste so you'll keep buying them.

Think about it - we have diseases and health problems that are either new or on the increase. Fybromyalgia, asthma, obesity, varieties of diabetes, auto immune system problems, etc. And in my head - the increase in these parallels the loss of food in our food.

I don't want to eat a tomato or peach that ripened in a truck nor do I want food that is grown large to look good for sales but has no nutrition left.

This is a very alarming trend and one that is increasing - that in spite of ads and articles about exercising and eating well.. How will this affect the aging process. We already know how obesity affect our children ? and our own bodies? ...

It's scary as no one seems to really be paying attention....

Over 65? Not so healthy...

According to the Center for Disease Control, nearly 80% of those over 65 have at least one chronic condition and about 50 % have at least two.

You can go to the CDC interactive site and check your state and others HERE

You can also view the information by indicators such as:

Health Status

Physically Unhealthy Days
Frequent Mental Distress
Oral Health: Complete Tooth Loss
Disability

Health Behaviors
No Leisure-Time Physical Activity
Eating ≥ 5 Fruits and Vegetables Daily
Obesity
Current Smoking

Among the overall USA findings:

20% of people aged 65 and older are obese
Almost 33% are sedentary
25 % of the women aged 65 and older haven't had a mammogram in the last two years
Almost 6% report mental distress 14 or more days in the past month.

Interestingly, to me, it varies widely from state to state like for obesity - Iowa is high - 24% but it's not the cold winters as as Louisiana is at 25% and Maryland at 23% and they are warmer in the winter...

Check your state - it's interesting.

Obesity - again

We are entering a new generation of obesity and now it's not just adults who are obese - it is expected that the number of children who are obese will hit 20% by the year 2010 - that's only FOUR years from now.

I heard or read somewhere that we are reaching that stage in obesity where this or the next generation of children will NOT have a longer life span than the parents...

Not only is obesity bad in and of itself, it makes all other medical problems worse....

I've been blogging about healthier children for a while now and hope the readers of this blog are among those who will not have obese children...It is something parents and grandparents have control over during the child's early years...and good nutrition early on can never be a bad choice...

Please watch what your children and grandchildren eat and make sure they get exercise.... After all we want them to grow older better - just like we are : -)

Heathiness

I have recently been reading a lot of research on topics related to the lifespan - mainly as I am teaching that class.

The ones that stick in my mind are those related to obesity. We are becoming such an obese country that the airplanes are widening seats and now children's safety seat makers are having to make bigger seats for the bigger children. Then the newest research is that obese people do not even recognize that they are obese. Only 15 percent of people in this category view themselves as obese. And while the percent of women who are obese has stabilized, a growing percent of men and children are seen as obese.

We are told that obesity leads to many health issues and worsens others...yet we eat away. For many it is a choice - is supersizing and calorie adding good for you just because it is advertised and can be a cheap add on?

Do you know what a normal sized serving is? It's about the size of your fist! So next you are eating a meal look at your fist and then look at your plate....and think about your health!

And please start thinking more seriously about adding supplements to your diet. We do not get enough of the "good stuff" from our food anymore - especially what we need from fruits and vegetables. And also know that we need 5-13 servings of fruit and vegetables a day [depending on your "stay healthy" caloric intake] but we tend to eat only about 3 servings a day! So again - eat well but supplement!
